Week 2, 2025 - I am forty
Song of the week:
Thoughts
Forty is a funny one. It's funny because it probably took thirty years to realise how forty was spelled. But also because it marks a bit of a milestone. I'm optimistically at 50% of my lifespan now. Which pessimistically means it's all downhill from here. But I'm happy, healthy, engaged with work, life, etc. I have friends, passions and hobbies. All things, as I've noted before on my little blog thing, that most men I know absolutely do not have at my age.
I'm forty, but optimistic. Having kids also sort-of gives you a new lease of life, and definitely a new lens by which to view the world. I've always had a good relationship to my future self, but I really have a strong bond to it now. So it's in my best interests to keep my mind and body happy and healthy.
So to celebrate such a milestone, so close to Christmas and the holiday break, I did not go mental on the booze, throw a big party or even eat bad food. I did enough of that to kill a herd of elephants. So we took it easy, chilled out and planned some nice things through the year. Like a visit to Monart to relax, etc.
The big gift to myself, which was somewhat accidental timing but I'll take the win, was my new car. Ever since I was a small kid I've loved cars. Anyone who knows me knows this to be true, and knows it took a weird amount of time for me to get my license, despite that love. I think it was nervousness about the whole thing. But this week I took delivery of my Porsche Macan. Sure, it's a family compact SUV thing. Yep, it's still fully electric. So no, it's not a 911 GT3 or anything as saucy. But if fourteen year old me knew that forty year old me was going to own a Porsche, he'd probably have become nauseous was excitement.
Luckily it's everything I wanted it to be. It's ridiculously fun to drive, has loads of fun features and ... well, I own a feckin' Porsche! I've also cut myself loose of the tyranny of Elon. My wife will certainly miss the Tesla (a brand we've driven exclusively for about 7 or 8 years!). But we both agree that not supporting someone like him is a good idea. Ironic, given the founding roots of Porsche.
Next week will be a busy one as we have Sales Kickoff. In San Fran. I am dreading the flight because my seat sucks, back is sore (I'm forty!) and I've a lot of work to do while there. But Thursday night a bunch of us will let some steam off after a busy pre-SKO window and enjoy a Friday hangover afterwards. And then I get to come home to my Porsche.
