Notes for April 27th 2024

Song of the week:

Notes

  • I spent a significant amount of this week in the air. I was on the ground for 36 hours at Stripe Sessions. A small (5000 attendees) conference in Moscone West in downtown San Fran. But to achieve that, I spent about 22 hours on a plane. I'm quite sluggish today (Saturday, after the Friday travelling), but after a week of hardcore conference'ing, my back and shoulders are worse for wear!
    • It was a wonderfully orchestrated conference. I was busy. So busy that I joked that my head might be way above water. With our partner ecosystem and big users, I've somehow become mildly well-known. And being called out a few times as someone to go-to by your CRO who, at that time, is on-stage with mic in hand, is something.
    • Seeing folks present on the same stage that Jobs announced the iPhone is pretty spectacular. And presenting in the same venue myself was weird. I pinched myself as I swore it'd be something I would like to do about 15 years ago when I worked for a small Apple Premium Reseller in Ireland.
  • San Francisco is so deeply broken, it's unreal. When I'm there I mostly spend time in our office, which is south of the city. So this week was unusual because we were downtown. And doing simple things like walking 1 block from the hotel to the venue, or finding food nearby, was grim. Properly grim. The homeless crisis there is out of control and I don't know how locals or local government stand for how poorly folks are being treated there.
    • On a stupider note, it seems ridiculous to me that the coffee scene in downtown SFO is so poor. They were famous for it once upon a time. They gave Seattle and Europe a run for its money. Dublin today is easily a better coffee city.
  • My iPhone is driving me mad. I have the current gen one and while it's nice, has a cool colour and has lovely apps that have not changed in years, the battery is attrocious. It's in a good healthy state (I tend not to charge beyond 80% and toggle low power mode at night, etc.) but it's still shit. And the apps I use are largely Overcast, Apple Music and WhatsApp. I'm not doing much with it. And a gently slide out of my pocket obliterated the screen. What is this?!
    • That said, this is probably teeing me up for an overdrive of excitement at WWDC, which is soon.
